Practically all of the about 64 billion tons of waste generated globally every year are a feasible fuel feedstock for waste-to-energy power plants. The solid waste fractions representing over 20 billion tons annually, i.e. municipal solid waste (MSW), industrial, commercial and institutional waste (ICI), construction and demolition waste (CDW), agricultural waste (AW), as well as bio-medical waste, landfill gas (LFG) and marine debris are usable as is, or with minor segregation and pre-treatment. The different sludges, over 40 billion tons annually, require more sophisticated methods for energy transformation. Technologies such as anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis or hydro-thermal carbonization (HTC) can be used to extract different energy fraction or combustible fuels out of the sludge streams. Utilizing the annually generated wastes instead of discarding them could account for up to 10% of the global energy consumption, while saving significant amounts of virgin raw materials.

The waste-to-energy market is evaluated at US$33 billion for the year 2019 growing at 6% p.a. reaching the market size of US$46 billion by the year 2025. The market is poised to show a significant growth throughout the course of the next five years primarily on account of the growing concerns regarding the proper disposal of waste along with the growing focus towards the generation of clean energy in many parts of the world. One of the key factors that are anticipated to propel the business growth opportunities include the rapid urbanization and industrialization in both developed and developing economies of the world.

The governments around the globe are implementing numerous strategies which are further aimed to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels owing to the high environmental impacts as well as costs. The thermal waste-to-energy technology is expected to hold a substantial share in the market primarily due to its simple process and being environmentally friendly, due to which it is highly adopted. The APAC region is anticipated to show promising growth opportunities due to the inclination of government towards waste management and increasing investments in waste-to-energy projects in the major emerging countries like India, China, and Indonesia, among others.

The modular, pre-engineered and pre-fabricated wasteWOIMA® waste-to-energy power plant is WOIMA’s answer to mitigating waste-induced challenges and offering base-load power generation capacity using locally abundantly available fuel, i.e. waste. Combined with other circular economy solutions in the WOIMA Ecosystem, such as recycling and “green” fuel production, it offers a sustainable route towards a carbon-neutral economy, zero landfilling, protection of the natural environment, efficient use of natural resources and better social equality. The wasteWOIMA® power plant is a multi-fuel solution capable of accepting a wide variety of waste fraction for incineration. Its high level of flexibility allows for large variations in the quality, quantity and composition of the waste fuels, while reducing their quantity by 95%.

Due to the heterogenous nature of the waste streams and the variable environmental conditions where waste is generated, a simple and robust solution is required for efficient and scalable operations. The wasteWOIMA® power plant is based on the proven grate combustion method that adapts easily to different types of solid waste streams. It combines the best available techniques (BAT) in waste-to-energy generation and extracts the maximum amount of value out of the waste, while protecting the environment from harmful emissions. It also promotes the recent trend towards smaller and decentralized solutions. It adapts to the needs of customers of different sizes; from small urban / neighbourhood solutions to megapolis waste challenges. Smaller size equals smaller footprint and faster project delivery solving the problem today instead of tomorrow.
