The Sustainable Development Agenda
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.
Implementation and success will rely on countries’ own sustainable development policies, plans and programs, and will be led by countries themselves. The SDGs will be a compass for aligning countries’ plans with their global commitments. Nationally owned and country-led sustainable development strategies will require resource mobilization and financing strategies. All stakeholders: governments, civil society, the private sector, and others, are expected to contribute to the realization of the new agenda.
WOIMA is committed to helping the developing countries reach these goals. The tool is our modular wasteWOIMA® waste-to-energy power plant, and the WOIMA Ecosystem built around it, that will
- recycle and treat efficiently the waste of 100,000 – 500,000 people
- generate clean and affordable energy for 50,000 – 100,000 people
- employ directly 100 to 200 people
- generate hundreds of jobs up- and downstream
- save 100,000 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions per year
- be up and running within 12 months
Some of the key SDGs, where WOIMA has the most impact are
WOIMA improves municipal solid waste and industrial waste collection rates; their sanitary treatment will create a clean and safe living environment that has a positive impact on people’s lives. Reduced exposure to bacteria, vermin, pests and odours frequently found on dumpsites further enhances their quality of life.
Unsanitary landfills and dumpsites are a major source of river, lake and groundwater pollution. Leachate water draining through the waste collects sulphides, chlorides, heavy metals and other toxins and deposits the in the soil and water downstream. WOIMA Ecosystem reduces leachate quantity practically to zero.
Waste is a free and locally abundantly available fuel that will save both fossil fuels and foreign currency in their imports. It generates base load power providing constant and reliable energy to the grid. WOIMA waste incineration adheres to the strictest emission limits, only water vapor and CO2 are emitted to the environment.
WOIMA Ecosystem generates hundreds of jobs on-site and both upstream and downstream. Waste collection and transportation, waste pre-sorting and recycling, on-site job and service opportunities, as well as SMEs utilizing the generated energy commodities and ash products are the first to benefit.
WOIMA power generation offers a platform for local industrialization. Electricity and thermal power (both heating and cooling) support the establishment of local SMEs, their job creation and wealth accumulation. Simultaneously, the environment benefits from increased waste utilization and recycling activities.
WOIMA decentralized waste management and power generation model transforms waste into energy close to where it is generated. This offers huge savings in waste transportation, power transmission and CO2 emissions.
WOIMA Ecosystem incinerates and/or digests the methane-generating biowaste into energy and/or biogas respectively. This has the potential to save millions of tons of methane emissions, which are 25 times more potent than CO2.
Oceans provide key natural resources including food, medicines, biofuels and other products. They help with the breakdown and removal of waste and pollution, and their coastal ecosystems act as buffers to reduce damage from storms. Maintaining healthy oceans supports climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.
WOIMA supports higher waste collection, recycling and utilization rates, which prevent waste from ending up in water ecosystems. Especially the most harmful plastic materials are the best fuel for our Ecosystem.
WOIMA Ecosystem replaces biomasses in both power generation and kitchen use. Our wasteWOIMA® power plant generates similar energy commodities as do biomass power plants and biogas works perfectly as cooking gas. This saves forests and plants to fight erosion and to photosynthesize carbon dioxide to oxygen.
