Climate change mitigation is one of the biggest challenges facing mankind today. EU has set an aggressive target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 in the European Green Deal. By 2050, Europe aims to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent.

Carbon capture alone does not solve the carbon dilemma. Downstream solutions for the storage (CCS) and utilization (CCU) of the captured carbon dioxide are required to permanently remove the CO₂ from circulation. CCS typically consists of transportation of liquefied CO₂ to a geological storage in the sub-surface rock formations, depleted oil and gas fields or deep saline formations. The preferred CCU uses CO₂ in e.g. hydrocarbon conversion processes, plastics manufacturing and as reactant for various chemical synthesis.

Decarbonizing power industry is the key to success. Today, the energy sector is responsible for over 50% of the total global CO₂ equivalent emissions of 52 billion tons p.a. Thus, it is an obvious choice for both CO₂ reduction measures and WOIMA target market. EU alone is investing hundreds of millions of euros in the development of the carbon capture sector worth over 10 billion euros annually.
